Where Did Spring Go?

Recently, the entire eastern portion of the United States have been having record breaking high temperatures. Since the beginning of the month, about 6,000 highs were broken. Six THOUSAND. Did we even have a spring? Here in the south, it feels like we went straight from a warm, spring-like winter...to summer! In Atlanta, they made it to 7 days in a ROW above 80 degrees. That beat the previous record set in 1908. In International Falls, they reached a record high of 79 degrees. The highest temperature ever recorded for March. So why such warm weather? Well recently, a strong High pressure has settled in the middle of the eastern half of the States. This has brought warm, south winds into most of the area and as a result, a very warm March. So if late winter/early spring is this warm, how will the summer be? only time will tell.

Bulldog to Bulldog

From one bulldog to another. 2 different college campuses 6 hours away. Here is the weekend and spring break forecast for Athens GA.

For the weekend, we're going to have gorgeous spring like weather. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60s with lows in the 40s and increasing cloud coverage on Sunday. Winds will be out of the East at 5-10 mph. If you plan on doing something outside, this is the perfect time to do so. Some suggestions in Athens would be the State Botanical Gardens on Milledge Ave, shopping in Downtown Athens, or just enjoying the beautiful campus of the University of Georgia.

As the week begins, clouds will continue to increase as well as the chance of rain as a cold front approaches from the west. Temperatures will climb and will approach the upper 70s as we get into Tuesday and Wednesday. The best chance for thunderstorms will be Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. This cold front will not bring cooler temperatures as the forecast calls for seasonably warm conditions for Thursday as well. All in all, it will be a pleasant Spring Break if you're happening to spend the break in Athens, with a few crummy moments. Get outside and enjoy the nice Georgia weather!

It won't be too hot you need to be like Uga and have your own bag of ice and an air conditioned dog house ;)

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Baseball Season is finally here! For some that means peanuts, cracker jacks and hot dogs. For others it means warmer weather and sunshine. The Mississippi State Bulldog Baseball team has experienced a myriad of different kinds of weather this weekend while playing in a tournament at  Dudy Noble. The bulldogs have so far swept the tournament. Friday night, the temperature dropped and bulldog fans had to experience a chilly game. The temperature at the first pitch was 48 degrees with a dew point at 25. Winds were coming out of the NW at 6 mph bringing in cooler temperatures. The bulldogs defeated Kansas 1-0.

Saturday was a beautiful day for baseball. At the time of the first pitch of the first game for the bulldogs, it was clear with a few high clouds, a little chilly in the shade but nice in the sun. Temperature was at 56 degrees with winds out of the NW at 12 mph with gusts up to 21 mph which could have definitely affected where the baseball went. I also noticed that one of the Mississippi Valley State University players missed a pop-up fly because of the sun, which therefore advanced the bulldogs farther into play. MSU defeated MVSU 13-5. The bulldogs also played Kansas at 4pm. At that time, the weather was slightly warmer with a temperature at 59 and winds out of the N at 12 mph. At the end of the second game, the temperature dropped to 48 degrees and winds died down significantly. The bulldogs beat Kansas 3-1.

Sunday (today) is just as beautiful as Saturday, but better! Temperatures are warmer and there is not a cloud in the sky. Currently we are at 62 degrees with winds out of the SSE. By the first pitch, temperature should be about 60 degrees, and the winds are predicted to be still out of the SSE but picking up at 8 mph. By the end of the game, the temperature will continue to drop throughout the evening getting to a low in the upper 40s.

Good luck to the MSU Baseball team! Lets beat those Delta Devils!

Dacula, Georgia Wx

Background: Dacula, Georgia (Duh-que-lah) is located right between Athens and Atlanta. The terrain is hilly with some farmland as well as trees. Typically, for this time of year, the average high for Dacula is around 54 degrees and the average low is around 31 degrees. The average precipitation in January is approximately 4.6 inches. Currently, Dacula has only received 1.6 inches of rain. Also, the highest temperature recorded this month has been 66 degrees, while the lowest temperature is 22 degrees. Today (Jan 18): Between yesterday (Jan. 17), and today, Dacula has seen a drastic temperature change. The high yesterday was 61, while the high today was 48. This is because a cold front arrived over Tuesday night, which dropped temperatures to the mid 30's to lower 40's. Winds shifted from the South, South-West to the West, North-West which brought the colder air that lowered temperatures. The winds were also fairly strong gusting to about 20 mph. Humidity also decreased as the day progressed leaving clear skies after the Tuesday rain.

Tomorrow (Jan 19): The warming trend will begin tomorrow starting with a high of 55 and a calm wind out of the south. It will be a clear day tomorrow with a few clouds outside. Perfect day to go to the park with your dog as long as you bring a jacket.

Weekend (Jan 20-22): The warming trend continues with a high of 60 on Friday and only increasing into the weekend reaching 66 on Sunday. Cloud coverage will increase throughout the day on Friday where there will be a 30% chance of rain for Friday afternoon and evening, along with the occasional thunderstorm. For Saturday, there is a higher chance of rain at 60%, and mostly cloudy throughout the day. On Sunday the rain chances and cloud coverage diminishes as we warm up once again.
