Starkville/MSU Wx

Background: Starkville is located in the northern/middle part of eastern Mississippi. Average temperatures at this time of year are a high of 53 and a low of 31, with average rainfall at 5.4 inches. The record high was set in 1943 with a high of 81, and the record low was set in 1985 at -6.

Tonight: Temperatures do not reflect the time of year. Tonight we will get down to a low of 60 with rain and the occasional thunderstorm moving in from the west. These storms will not be severe for the Starkville area, but the threat for severe weather is more prominant south of I-20.

Tomorrow: The rain will continue throughout the day tomorrow as the QLCS (quasi-linear convective system) moves over the region and dumps rain and thunderstorms all over campus. We will reach a high of 72 as the southern winds bring in warm moist air to warm up our rainy day. Low will be about 42 after the system moves through and brings us the drenching rain. Rainfall amounts are expected to be between 3/4 to an inch. By Thursday night the rain is expected to move out with some lingering clouds.

Other News: Sunday night, the south was slammed by severe storms. Alabama got hit hard with 10 reported tornadoes ranging from EF-0 to EF-3. There were also three reported fatalities, and many people injured because of these overnight twisters. Tornadoes were also reported in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. In conjunction with the January 22nd tornadoes. A problem arose with Diane Sawyer claiming that there was no warning to the tornadoes on World News. Needless to say, the meteorology world was in an uproar. To view the video, follow this link: http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/alabama-tornadoes-survival-lessons-15433740

On a brighter note, The AMS conference is well underway down in the Big Easy. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the student conference and learned a lot about careers in meteorology. I truly enjoyed the chance to participate and experience such an event.
