Starkville/MSU Wx

Background: Starkville is located in the northern/middle part of eastern Mississippi. Average temperatures at this time of year are a high of 53 and a low of 31, with average rainfall at 5.4 inches. The record high was set in 1943 with a high of 81, and the record low was set in 1985 at -6.

Tonight: Temperatures do not reflect the time of year. Tonight we will get down to a low of 60 with rain and the occasional thunderstorm moving in from the west. These storms will not be severe for the Starkville area, but the threat for severe weather is more prominant south of I-20.

Tomorrow: The rain will continue throughout the day tomorrow as the QLCS (quasi-linear convective system) moves over the region and dumps rain and thunderstorms all over campus. We will reach a high of 72 as the southern winds bring in warm moist air to warm up our rainy day. Low will be about 42 after the system moves through and brings us the drenching rain. Rainfall amounts are expected to be between 3/4 to an inch. By Thursday night the rain is expected to move out with some lingering clouds.

Other News: Sunday night, the south was slammed by severe storms. Alabama got hit hard with 10 reported tornadoes ranging from EF-0 to EF-3. There were also three reported fatalities, and many people injured because of these overnight twisters. Tornadoes were also reported in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee. In conjunction with the January 22nd tornadoes. A problem arose with Diane Sawyer claiming that there was no warning to the tornadoes on World News. Needless to say, the meteorology world was in an uproar. To view the video, follow this link: http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/video/alabama-tornadoes-survival-lessons-15433740

On a brighter note, The AMS conference is well underway down in the Big Easy. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the student conference and learned a lot about careers in meteorology. I truly enjoyed the chance to participate and experience such an event.

Dacula, Georgia Wx

Background: Dacula, Georgia (Duh-que-lah) is located right between Athens and Atlanta. The terrain is hilly with some farmland as well as trees. Typically, for this time of year, the average high for Dacula is around 54 degrees and the average low is around 31 degrees. The average precipitation in January is approximately 4.6 inches. Currently, Dacula has only received 1.6 inches of rain. Also, the highest temperature recorded this month has been 66 degrees, while the lowest temperature is 22 degrees. Record high is 80 degrees (2002). Record low is -8 degrees (1985).

Today (Jan 18): Between yesterday (Jan. 17), and today, Dacula has seen a drastic temperature change. The high yesterday was 61, while the high today was 48. This is because a cold front arrived over Tuesday night, which dropped temperatures to the mid 30's to lower 40's. Winds shifted from the South, South-West to the West, North-West which brought the colder air that lowered temperatures. The winds were also fairly strong gusting to about 20 mph. Humidity also decreased as the day progressed leaving clear skies after the Tuesday rain.

Tomorrow (Jan 19): The warming trend will begin tomorrow starting with a high of 55 and a calm wind out of the south. It will be a clear day tomorrow with a few clouds outside. Perfect day to go to the park with your dog as long as you bring a jacket.

Weekend (Jan 20-22): The warming trend continues with a high of 60 on Friday and only increasing into the weekend reaching 66 on Sunday. Cloud coverage will increase throughout the day on Friday where there will be a 30% chance of rain for Friday afternoon and evening, along with the occasional thunderstorm. For Saturday, there is a higher chance of rain at 60%, and mostly cloudy throughout the day. On Sunday the rain chances and cloud coverage diminishes as we warm up once again.
